Super Nintendo vs SEGA Genesis comparison

Today, I decided to compare these two 16 bit consoles to see which ones are the best and what are the best features that 16 bit consoles has to offer. I really like Super Nintendo and SEGA Genesis back in old days at forth generations era and I kinda liking the games and the systems that these two competitors did a brilliant job on the game consoles. So here is the console wars comparison and here are my five categories to see which ones are better on the consoles, so please respect my opinions on my comparison on two of the consoles. Let the showdown begin!

Best console design

Super Nintendo console design looks pretty simple for European and Japan model. I find this console design look bit kiddish style with child friendly brick model. It feels little bit rough for console system, but it does have really nice 3 big set button on the console because it's easier to have cuffed looking power button, rectangle eject button, and square shaped reset button is sounds pretty step forward for casual gamers to power the game up, resetting the game and taking the game cartridge out by pressing eject button, which you don't have to take the cartridge out by using your own hands.

SEGA Genesis console design looks really badass with slick looking console system and awesome looking design with round shaped on the middle of the console system with big logo with it and it feels nice and smoother for console system. It has simple power switch, cool reset button and of course I like the design of the volume control on the left side of the console. I got to love the open mouth shaped of the cartridge slot because it's more monastery and how awesome the cartridge slot looks.

Winner: SEGA Genesis

Best controller

Super Nintendo controller has really nice dogbone design, which is very easier to hold and it's feels very comfortable indeed. It has simple d-pad shaped, which feels very easier to control by pressing in the different direction. It has 4-colorful buttons in smaller shape, which is very easier to press, so your top thumb can press on Y button, while your middle thumb can press B button is feels very straightforward. It has two triggers on top, which is the newest way to press it with your fingertip, which can be used for different games, like Starfox, which the triggers allows your airwing to perform tilting on sideways or barrel roll by double tapping on triggers, which makes the gameplay so easy and simple for the different kinds of games.
It has two middle button on the controller, has select button to select the things in the game, and start button to pause the game.

SEGA Genesis has bigger controller design, which is little bit harder to hold, until you get used with holding the controller. It has round shaped d-pad button, which feels very clunky for the controls. It has 3-rounded shape button in sideways position, so your thumb have to move side to side, which I don't mind at all, and it feels bit flat to press, but plays okay for some of the games library. I find the 6-button controller feels much better than the original controller because the shape of the controller is perfectly small and easy to hold. The d-pad button have improved a lot to make it very easy to press, which makes the gameplay more controllable. The 6-button is in the good shape, so these can be good for arcade fighting games, like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat that features 6-button controls to make the gameplay played good compared to 3-button controller is very difficult to play with. The Super Nintendo didn't have the problems at all because it already has 6 button layout is just what you all needed.

Winner: Super Nintendo

Best graphics

Super Nintendo has 256 x 224 to 512 x 239 resolution, 15 bit color space, 256 color palettes and 32,768 color layer. It includes mode 7 as the graphics engine, which allows backgrounds layer to be rotated and scaled on scanline to create many difference effects. There are some games that uses the mode 7, such as Super Mario Kart, which has very colorful enviroment and great character sprites, but for mode 7, it allows gameplay design to have draw distances and 2D horizontal dimensions on flat surface position, and the game it self can be rotated and scaling at the same time as the character moves in different direction.
Super FX is the enhanced graphics chip for the SNES cartridge, which allowing the game to have 3D dimension and polygonal models. For example Starfox is well known game that uses the Super FX allowing to have 3D dimensional gameplay aspects, and polygonal looking game design for airwing, enemies and some layouts. I say the Super Nintendo has the most highest quality graphics on 16 bit era because it's moves very realistic, having colorful details, has very nice visuals and animation, and overall environment is just to keep the game graphics look awesome.

SEGA Genesis has 320 x 240 or 320 x 280 resolution, 512 color palettes and 64 color layer. It uses VDP, which is the improved version of the predecessors SEGA Master System, which adds mode 5 for most of the games with advanced VDP features.
There some of the Genesis games that uses the best graphics limitations, such as Vectorman that uses pre-rendered 3D models, which is sounds simular to SNES game Donkey Kong Country that uses pre-rendered 3D models. It's properly well animated characters model, having great environmental of scaling backgrounds, and having parallax effects, which looked good on the game itself.
SEGA also uses the graphic enhancement chip for the game, such as Virtua Racing, which uses SVP is simular to one of the SNES Super FX, allowing to have 3D dimension, and Polygonal enviromental. It's runs the game well, but the graphics environment in the game doesn't look good as the SNES counterpart Super FX that has way better graphics detail than the Genesis SVP because Virtua Racing on Genesis looks kinda blocky compared with Starfox on SNES. Overall the SEGA Genesis graphics is quite decent for some of the games, but it can't beat with their competitors Super Nintendo has the best graphics of 16 bit era.

Winner: Super Nintendo

Best sounds

Super Nintendo has 8-bit of Sony SPC700, and 16 bit of Sony DSP. It featuring 8 channels format, and 32 Khz with 16 bit stereo. I say the sound effects of the game has good usage of voice, and having more sound atmosphere for backgrounds effects making it the best sound effects for some of the games so far. It has really best music track from the most of the games that are the best for the music genres, like movie like orchestrated, hard rock, and original video game soundtrack. So here is the greatest music from the SNES games on below to listen and hear how good the SNES music are.

Super Metroid - Lower Brinstar

Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest - Battle 1 theme

SEGA Genesis uses 6 FM channels, 4 PSG Channels, runs 7.6 Mhz sound rate, and of course Genesis has headphone jack, and volume control as well. I say the sound effects of genesis has lot of usage of voices, and some background noise, but it's sounds very cranky and thin compared to SNES sound effects. It also has the best music from the game that are the best for the music genres, like Heavy Metal, Electronics music, and video game soundtrack.
Here is the badass music from the SEGA Genesis games on below to listen and hear how awesome the SEGA Genesis are.

Thunder Force 4 - Metal Squad

The adventures of Batman & Robin - Big Boss

Overall the SNES has the greatest music from the most of the games, like Final Fantasy, Super Metroid, Super Mario Kart, F-Zero, Megaman X, Starfox, Chrono Trigger, Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct and etc, but to tell the truth, I say you can't beat the music quality from SEGA Genesis because the music from most of SEGA Genesis games sounds really awesome and kick ass that blew my mind from the game, like Thunderforce 4, M.U.S.H.A, Power Rangers the Movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Adventures of Batman and Robin, Street of Rage 2, Gunstar Heroes, Shinobi 3, Earthworm Jim, Vapor Trail, and etc. There's one more thing, you can plug any sound equipments or headset to the headphone jack on the console, allowing to have really good experience of music quality.

Winner: SEGA Genesis

Best games

Super Nintendo has the best games library of all times. It has Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Starfox, Megaman X, Chrono Trigger, Killer Instinct, Donkey Kong Country, Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, Final Fantasy 6, Super Castlevania 4, F-Zero, and so on.
My favourite SNES games are Super Metroid because it's 2D action-adventure with darker level, scary atmospheres, awesome boss fights, and has the greatest gameplay challenge ever on SNES.
I've enjoyed Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past is one of my favourite open world RPG adventure so far. I really love the story development with darker plot and memorable characters, more world to discover, collecting items, going to someone places, like houses, caves and some hidden places, and gameplay is somewhat fun to play with.
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong Quest is one of the best donkey kong games i've ever played. It has really awesome levels with wacky enemies and very challenging level design. It has the best electronic sound track in the game with catchy tunes and nice upbeating sounds.
Super Castlevania 4 is pretty good 2D hack and slash horror game with excellent variety of levels, boss battles, great weapons and power ups, and it's has more scary and dark themes in the game is by far the best on the series.
Killer Instinct is the magnificent and by far the best 2D fighting games on SNES. It very faithful port from the arcade version with fantastic gameplay with over 20 ultra combos, crazy characters, awesome levels, great 2 player battle, and has best music in the game.
Starfox is the most successful 3D rail shooter for SNES is due to what the SNES is very capable of using enhanced chip to produce more graphics environment. It has fantastic gameplay with great flight controls and more variety of having more gameplay features, good weapons, and the great inspirations from the star wars movies.
SNES is best for RPGs, Platform, and Adventures genres.

SEGA Genesis has also the best games outthere as well. It has Sonic the Hedgehog, Shinobi 3, Gunstar Heroes, Earthworm Jim, Mortal Kombat, Street of Rage, Shining Force, Road Rash, Super Hang On, Thunderforce 4, M.U.S.H.A, Toejam and earl, Vapor Trail, Comix Zone, Outrun, After Burner 2, Virtua Racing, Columns, Micro Machines 96, Phantasy Star 2, Golden Axe and so on.
My favourite Genesis games are Sonic the Hedgehog 2 because I love playing fast paced 2D platforming game with blast processing speed, wacky stages, playing on co-op or 2 players battle with two characters, and awesome 3D bonus stages, which makes me enjoy the game.
Earthworm Jim is fantastic run and gun game for SEGA Genesis. It features funny protagonist, wonderful graphics with Saturday afternoon animations style, awesome levels with big challenging, and catchy music tunes by Tommy Tallarico.
Golden Axe is the amazing hack and slash game, which is faithful port from the arcade version. It plays like the arcade version with great gameplay, well challenged stages, intense boss battles, and it has the best magic attacks in the game.
Street of Rage 2 is the best beat em ups games for 16 bit console itself. The gameplay mechanics have been improved over the first game, which the sequel have better hit detection, brand new special moves, 2 of new characters to play as, another great electronic soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro, and of course it has the best stages in the game.
Outrun is the classy racing game from the original 1986 arcade version. The port for the Genesis version is far superior from the arcade version. It has magnificent stages, nice background scenery, great soundtrack, and of course the gameplay is just plays like the original arcade makes the game fun to play.
SEGA Genesis has the best beat em ups, racing, and run and gun genres.

Winner: Super Nintendo

Overall

Super Nintendo is somewhat the best consoles on 16 bit era with such a quality games library choices, excellent controller with awesome dogbone shaped and having 4-buttons on front and 2- triggers on top in the right positions is giving you a better overall gameplay with precised control and easy to play, and the graphics are looking superb for most of the games is due to SNES hardware can able to handle more heavier graphics environment is definitely real looking 16 bit graphics.
SEGA Genesis is pretty great consoles. It does have a great console design with slick looking design and smoother textures as well.
The 3-button controller is looking decent with round shaped buttons and sideways button positions, but the 6-button is definitely better with redesigning d-pad button to give you a better gameplay controls, and good looking 6-buttons on front, which is quite good for most of games that uses the 6-button features. The games library are quite good for 16 bit console itself, but not just good as the SNES has really better games overall. The graphics are decent for some of the games, but it's just not far detailed as the SNES has very powerful usage of the graphics.
The music quality for SEGA Genesis is sounds better for most of the games, but I say SNES is best for sound effects.
The winner of the 16 bit wars goes to Super Nintendo as the 16 bit console masterpiece.
