Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut PS4 Review

Ghost of Tsushima is a Action-Adventure game was originally released in 2020 for PS4, while the expanded version was later released in 2021 titled as Director's Cut both for PS4 and PS5.
It was developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by SONY Interactive Entertainment.

So if you combine the action-adventure games like Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption with the Akira Kurosawa's films into a open-world game where you take control of a badass samurai warrior battling out against the invasion caused by the brutal empire, so that is Ghost of Tsushima.
When I first saw the trailer reveal back when it was first shown at Sony Interactive Entertainment's Paris Games Week press conference in 2017, as well as the gameplay footage at E3 2018.
I was blowned away with the visuals, cinematics, presentation, and of course gameplay which really proves to show the true form of what the future of gaming is like in later years, so I am impressed to see the game like this being on the PS4's system powerhouse.
After the 2020's game release, it received many positive reviews from the gaming press, and also a commercial success has sold more than 9.73 million copies by July 2022 and was one of Sony's fastest-selling original games.
It also received numerous of nominated awards in 2020 including The Game Awards and Golden Joystick Awards, while winning at Japan Game Awards in 2021.

It has caught me attention to give it a shot because I heard many of great things about the game that was heavily inspired by Akira Kurosawa's samurai-classic films, such as Yojimbo and Seven Samurais, which is why I am interested in playing it on my PS4 to see if this game did lives up to my expectations perfectly or is it far from being perfection.
I will discuss all the details regarding the open-world exploration, combat system, story and characters, and of course visuals and sounds design with pros and cons further on this review.

So without go further do, let's start the review.

Presentation

The game set in a year 1274 as it takes place in Tsushima Island where the invasion of Japan was led by Mongols empire making a brutal war conflict between the Japanese and Mongols.

The story starts off with a Japanese samurai warrior named Jin Sakai and his uncle Lord Shimura, who are a members of Clan Sakai, went on the battle to fight and defeat many Mongols army.
However, many of Japanese army were killed after the battle which left Shimura being captured by Mongols army, while Jin got separated after being thrown off the bridge by Mongols leader.
Then he is found by the female thief named Yuna came to help him by escaping from the Mongols camp.
After the escape, Jin had agreed to help Yuna as an new companion while meeting with others to join in, as well as recruiting with Japanese army in a quest to protect the Japanese island and conquer the Mongols empire in order to bring back peace and freedom.

So far, the plot in the game is done absolutely incredible because I love the accuracies of Mongols invasions of Japan where all the mens had gone through hell fighting in the brutal war to protect their home island filled with many innocent people are likely to get captured and tortured by the empires led by warlords.
It brings lot of interesting history in the game which is why I had a reason to bought this to play single-player story campaign.
You have Jin Sakai (Daisuke Tsuji) as main protagonist goes out his journey to help his people of Tsushima who are held captured by Mongols empire. I really liked his persona for its bravery and confidence which is what I liked about him is that he really cares about saving his people lives, agrees offer to help, and confronting those bunch of horrible bandits that commits crime which delivers his excellence personality.
He has his uncle named Lord Shimura (Eric Steinberg) who is a father-figure had thought Jin to learn to become a samurai warrior.
He was held prisoned by Mongols army starts interrogating him while he's waiting for his nephew and Japanese army soon to rescue him.
Jin has shares with supporting cast of characters such as Yuna the female thief (Sumalee Motano) and her blacksmith brother Taka (Eddie Shin), elder-female warrior Lady Masako Adachi (Lauren Tom), renowned Kyūdō archer Sensei Sadanobu Ishikawa (François Chau), merchant and con-artist Kenji (James Hiroyuki Liao), and Buddhist warrior monk Norio (Earl T. Kim) came to aid him to fight against the empires during the battles.
Lastly you have the main villain called General Khotun Khan of the Mongol Empire (Patrick Gallagher), who is a cousin of Kublai Khan and grandson of Genghis Khan. He is a big fat ruthless warlord are responsible of invading Japanese Island of Tsushima, so he is a one bad mother f***er who is a tough and brutal looking villain that he can squash and pound you in pieces is what made him quite deadly and also one of a dangerous leader of Mongol army.
The motion capture actors in the whole game does such an incredible job of portraying their roles really nails their performance in terms of character's development, spoken dialogue, and interacting between the characters throughout the cinematic scenes is what made the acting in story campaign so great.

I considered the whole presentation is the work of art because you can't go wrong with the cultural stuff that Japan was very known for its traditional Japanese cultures such as ancient folklores, bold mountains, colourful natures, temples and shrines, and cherry blossom that creates the beautiness of Japan.
It has 3 regions such as Izuhara, Toyotama, and Kamiagata which filled with lush forests, flowering rivers, beautiful grasslands, shrines, hot springs, haiku, farmstead, villages, beaches, fireflies, and many stuff going around that are so overwhelmingly beautiful to discover things that I am so grateful to see the game like this are looking so impressive.
I got to say the cinematic design in the game is fantastic especially with the use of motion capturing technology that adds the game's realism just to make most of the characters in the game capturing their emotions and expression as well as keeping the lip-syncing intact just feels right on the cutscenes.
The game's atmospheres is stunningly amazing especially with the peaceful vibes of places that makes you feel relax and relived such as making poetry on haiku, make prayer on shrines, and taking bath in hot springs which really helps you reflecting on stuff related to serenity, death, honour, and so on.
The best part of the cinematics stuff that made samurai genres quite famous is the stand-offs duel where groups of guys will make a move until the other one does something, where as the other sequences such as the part where twos opponents makes an eye to eye contact before they draw the sword to begin the battle adds the game's badassery.
This is got to be one of the greatest presentation in any of video games does a job well done by AAA development team feels really proud of their results turns out very successfully.

Overall, it has incredible storyline and characters, beautiful presentation settings, and fantastic cinematic design.

Gameplay

In single-player campaign, you get to control as Jin Sakai in open-world environments as your main goal is to defeat the Mongols empire by liberating the main fortress and camps as possible in each region in order to save the island.
You just move around by pushing the left thumbstick forward, while clicking the left thumbstick to sprint to traverse throughout the areas, but you can also traverse much faster with the horse riding which you can call out your pet friend to join you on the ride by hitting the left d-pad button making the traversing much easier to explore throughout the level.
Pushing the right thumbstick around is to control the camera movement to look and interact around the surrounding.
You will have cross button that allow Jin to jump on platforms such as wall climbing and landing on obstacles, and the circle button that makes Jin roll around that are used as dodging enemy's projectiles or safe landing when jumping off from high platforms.
You will obtain one of the grappling hook item in later part of the story mission which allows you to swing, climb, and jump on unreachable platforms by clicking on right trigger button in mid-air.
The touchpad buttons will have 4 commanding gestures such as swipe up to pinpoint the location with guiding wind that leads you to the destination, swipe down to bowing which can be used for something like paying respects, swipe left to equip flute to play calming song, and swipe right to draw/sheath sword.
In exploration, you will access to a map screen at the pause menu which tells you where you are located in, but everything else are all covered up meaning these locations are not been fully discovered yet unless you had to traverse around the map to visit a new places including villages, shops, and houses, or liberate one or more enemy's camps and fort will expand further more on the map meaning more discoveries will appear as a question mark symbols on the map such as hot springs, shrines, bamboo strikes, and etc.
You can also use fast travel options in the pause menu after you had discovered a new location will allow you to select any of these available places you want to visit making it easier for those who does not want to travel more than 100 meter distance.

In swordplay combat, you will have two basic attacks such as hitting the square button to use quick attack deals less damage but perform faster, while hitting the triangle button will allow you to perform heavy attack deals much damage but slower to perform.
Like I've mentioned the circle button before which is used as dodging are effective for when the enemies perform their heavy attack highlights with the red flashing dot, but you will have left shoulder button which are used as blocking and parrying the enemy's attack when the blue flashing dot appears which tells you when to parry, so it requires a perfect timing to get a perfect parrying which staggers the enemy off which means you can perform an counterattack on them after perfect parrying.
You will also have other weapons to obtain such as bow and blowgun which you will hold left trigger button to aim, while holding the right trigger to pull the arrow back for precision then release it to fire.
After defeating the enemies or beating numerous of the mission, you will be rewarded with EXPs, as well as obtaining the new techniques and skills which I will provide you these stuff further more on this review.
Stuff like you will have numerous of weapons and stance that really enhances your combat ability such as half bow which is short-ranged bow can be used to fire both normal and fire arrows. The fire arrows will set enemies on fire causing light damage, can expand large range of fires into dry grass, and cause barrels of gunpowder to explode which burns enemies nearby.
The long bow are slightly far-distance ranged weapon giving a much précised aiming at the enemies takes much heavier damage than the half bow, and it also can fire explosive arrows which can inflict a lot of damage to groups of enemies.
The blowgun is a dart weapon are used for poisoning the enemy which they can instantly die in 5 secs, where as the hallucination can cause the enemies turned into a blind rage and would attack anyone except hostages strangely.
The item will have numerous of sub-weapons such as sticky bomb that sticks directly into enemies till it get exploded deals similar damage as the exploding arrows, the kunai is a throwing blade can be thrown with 2 or 3 more blades to multiple enemies nearby perfect for stealth play, the way of the flame unleashes with the flaming sword can also set the enemies on fire just like with the flaming arrows, and of course the smoke bomb will expand the large cloud of smoke makes the enemies unable to detect you nearby.
You will have 4 different stances allowing Jin to perform different style of fighting techniques such as stone stance are effective against the swordmen, the water stance works effectively on shieldmen, the wind stance staggers the spearmen, and the moon stance deals against brutes with heavy attacks deal extra stagger damage to them which these are the stances adds the realism of combat.
In stealth play, you'll be sneaking around the enemy's camp or fort depending on which mission you're playing on, so during the stealth you will see an enemy's indicator which indicates the status where if they notices you suspiciously will turn the indicator yellow meaning they will search for you nearby, but if the indicator turns red which mean they finally caught you in action can lead into fight.
The best way to avoid getting caught is to find the hiding spot that the enemies won't able to see you whereabouts.
You can also perform the sneak kill on the enemy in close-range during the stealth by hitting on square button but make sure they don't see you nearby, and you can also highlight the enemies by hitting the touchpad button is not just focusing on hearing, but also you could able to see where the enemies near close-by making an easier to navigate the areas without getting caught in action.
Like I've mentioned about EXP points which you can able to upgrade your skill tree allowing you to perform various of moves such as sprint strike will let you do dashing attack, chain assassination instantly kill 2 or 3 enemies at a time during the stealth, stand-off streak lets you dispatch even more enemies at the beginning of a fight, mental fortitude slows down the time lets you focused more on aiming with bow much easier, perfect parrying healing adding a healing effect makes Jin harder to kill is a great way to restore some health, and there's more of techniques to upgrade improving Jin's fighting skills.
I also liked the two of the mythic moves such as heavenly strike which is a unblockable attack that deals big damage to staggered foes, while dance of wrath deals 3 combos attack, but my favourite part of it is the ghost stance which allowing Jin to unleash his instant kill on 3 enemies, so you will need to charge it up by killing enemies without taking any damage till the metre bar reached fully before activating ghost stance.
Speaking of upgrades, you will gather all different kinds of materials can be collected throughout the open world, so stuff like wood, metal, cloth, and goods which you will need these supplies to upgrade stuff like armor and weapons can be traded with trappers, swordsmiths, armors, and bowyers at the shop in ally's camp or fort.
These will improve upon your attributes such as more ammunition capacity for arrows and bombs, quality defense to reduce damage, and increased strengths for swords and bows that makes Jin feel more stronger throughout the adventures.

The combat system plays absolutely well throughout the battle and exploration which I am happy with the swordplay mechanics where you have an options to change stance that makes your fighting style feel effective against the different enemy's classes like swordmans and brutes, and I also liked the parrying system which displays enemy's blue light dot meaning that you can easily able to parry them in right timing just works pretty well during the battle.
Then you will have variety of weapon choices like the bow, blowgun, kunai, bombs, and you name it comes very handy with the different ammunition like you have fire arrows, explosive sticky bombs, and poisonous darts which you will have the choice to pick and choose any of these that works better on the events like stealth mission or lethal battles.
I also liked obtaining many new abilities, collecting materials, and earning EXPs after beating numerous of missions and activities with many upgrades to improve upon your fighting techniques, weapons, armors, and other stuff I've mentioned above which really builds up the player's skills meaning the more you earn stuff the stronger your character becomes powerful is the reason you had to keep busy with the game, so that your character is strong enough to fight against highly skilled enemies in later story mission.
The stand-offs duel, the stealth assassination, one on one boss battle, rescuing innocent hostages, helping with supportive characters throughout the mission, and liberating all the enemy's camp and fort is epically stunning that keeps the game very entertaining especially on both story and side missions, where as discovering new activities in each regions like hot springs, haiku, and bamboo strikes that keeps me playing over and over to get many completion as possible which is why I loved playing these types of genres that took over 30 to 50 hours long of lengthy campaign, so I am happy with the results had turned out really outstanding job with the controls, exploration, and of course numerous of story and side quests that the team behind this had done it right.

Overall, it has outstanding combat system, large open-world exploration, and epic story campaign.

Graphics

This game is what I considered as the most beautiful things that Sucker Punch Productions had ever produced showing a true technical feats that the PS4 was being capable on the hardware.
It feels more like of the PS5 title than the PS4 itself thanks to large range of open-world design filled with bold and gorgeous environments of the temples and villages, the heavy textures of landmark stuff, and has great use of draw-distances like mountains or hills which you will never seen anything such outstanding for todays standard.
With the use of real-time day and night cycle starting from bright and colourful mornings to grainy and dull night time which really changes the nature's weather system such as clouds, winds, thunder, and snow adds the game's realism.
I also liked the use of the special effects on some environments such as these grass and flowerbed firmly moves slowly, the leaves particles came flying down from the sakura trees, the oceans made the stream of wavy waters, the campfire made the smoky clouds coming up to the sky, and you'll see the beauty of the fireflies glowing in the dark misty places is just so miracle to look at the Japanese culture stuff that I considered the game as the biggest technical marvel for PS4 system.
The PS5 version are also look fantastic with the 4K resolution, runs 60fps, and has better loading time, so you may not notice as much in terms of colours and details in open-world design are looked identical on both PS4 and PS5 versions, but still they looked gorgeous on both system.
The character model is looking spectacular on both motion capturing cutscenes and in-game exploration with precise lip-syncing on facial animation and the realistic movement of body figure had done absolutely right it should look in the game.
This is clearly to be one of the most ground-breaking game's design in any of PS4's library, so you will be amazed to see how much gorgeous the game runs and plays on the SONY's one of the kind hardware machine.

Overall, it has bold and gorgeous environments, impressive special effects, and spectacular character animation.

Music and Sounds

The original soundtrack is magnificent to listen because I love the Japanese orchestra that delivers the emotions to the game's presentation.
I considered the "The Way of the Ghost" as the saddest but the most beautiful song I ever listened especially on both with vocals and instrumental version which was sang by Clare Uchima.
I also liked the epicness of intense song such as "Jin Sakai", "No Mercy", and "A Reckoning of Blood" that made my blood pumping up for epic battle of brutally war.
My favourite part of the song has to be the ones in the haiku sequence called "Forgotten Song" which I am so amazed with the atmospheric sounds around me especially when the music plays on my PS4 controller's built-in speaker during the haiku sequence is just sounds incredible that made you feel relaxed and relived at same time listening it.
It was composed by Ilan Eshkeri and Shigeru Umebayashi did such incredible job of capturing the Japanese orchestral sounds pretty nicely done in the game.
The game has amazing sound design in regards of atmospheric effects that you hear in open-world environments such as the sounds of winds, stream of rivers, and people's chatting from the villages, and I got to give a huge praise to voice cast did such a fantastic job on their performance showing their energy and charisma that fits perfectly on their character's role.

Overall, it has magnificent soundtrack, amazing sound design, and fantastic voice performance.

Special Features

The director's cut came with bonuses such as Iki Island which is a DLC story expansion adds new missions and exploration with 5 to 6 hours of play, and it also includes online multiplayer mode called Legends with 4-player co-op, and some digital deluxe features such as director's commentary, digital artbook, and in-game cosmetics like skin set.
Sadly for those who owns physical PS4 copy as Director's cut will not have free upgradable PS5 version, instead you had to pay £10 to upgrade your game for PS5, or even worse for those who has a original release copy will had to pay £25 to upgrade your game for PS5.

Overall, lackluster upgrade prices but excellent deluxe bonuses.

Final Verdict

Presentation 10/10 - incredible storyline and characters, beautiful presentation settings, and fantastic cinematic design.

Gameplay 10/10 - outstanding combat system, large open-world exploration, and epic story campaign.

Graphics 10/10 - bold and gorgeous environments, impressive special effects, and spectacular character animation.

Music and Sounds 10/10 - bold and gorgeous environments, impressive special effects, and spectacular character animation.

Special Features 9/10 - DLC story expansion, online multiplayer mode, and some digital deluxe features.

Overall 10/10 - As I have God of War (2018) as my all-time favourite PS4 game so far, Ghost of Tsushima deserves to be on my same list because this game proves to be not just being one of the best game on the PS4's library, but also one of the most beautiful Action-Adventure game that Sucker Punch Productions ever produced thanks to story, open-world, combat, visuals, and sounds adds the game's main highlight is the major reason to recommend this for those who loves watching Japanese-samurai cinema films and playing action-adventure type of games will be fully appreciated to play this epic samurai adventures.

As a director's cut, it is still also worth for purchase which you can get it physically on PS4 and PS5 for in between £30 to £40 which is quite cheaper compared to digital copy which cost between £60 to £70 at PS Store, but you can also get access to play this game freely with PS Plus subscription.
For those who are not so keen with the director's cut, you can also get the PS4 copy of the original release physically for less than £20.

That being said, go play this game I can guarantee you will love this especially on both the PS4 and PS5 because it's deserves to be on the Playstation's another masterpiece list, so I was hoping for development team considered to make sequel in the near future.

Pac-Man World: Re-Pac PS4 Review

Pac-Man World: Re-Pac is a 3D platforming game was released in 2022 for PS4, PS5, XSX/S, XBONE, Switch, and PC. It was developed by Now Production and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, and also a full remake of 1999's 3D platforming game titled as Pac-Man World for PS1.

Before we had Nintendo's Mario and SEGA's Sonic as a primary mascots for video game industry, there was a Bandai Namco's Pac-Man that was all started back in early 80's. In the year around 1980, a Japanese video game designer Toru Iwatani had created the arcade game called Pac-Man, a maze-action game where you take control of titular yellow round-shaped hero must eat all the dots inside an enclosed maze while avoiding four colored ghosts such as  Blinky (red), Pinky (pink), Inky (cyan), and Clyde (orange) that pursue him around the maze.
During the game's release, it became a widespread critical and commercial success making Pac-Man a cultural video game icon and also listed as one of the greatest video games of all time.
The game's success had turned into a Namco's major franchise spawned with numerous of several sequels, merchandise, two television series, and a hit single "Pac-Man Fever" by Buckner & Garcia, and it also credited Pac-Man as a first video game mascot and flagship icon of Bandai Namco Entertainment.

I remembered my old day when my brother had bought the first desktop computer with Windows 95 OS being running on, and comes with software disk that includes the game which I first discovered Pac-Man as a young kid.
As playing on the Win95 computer, it is very simple game where I've used the arrows button on the keyboard to control Pac-Man roaming through the mazes while eating the dots and trying to run away from those colorful ghosts won't stop chasing you around which is why I loved the hell of the game because it's fun and addicting at same time that kept me playing over an hours.
In around my age of 20s when I had both the PS3 and PS4 in 2010s, I began to play other titles such as Pac-Man Championship Edition DX and 2 which many calling it one of the best Pac-Man games ever made applauded the game's addictive nature, replay value, intense gameplay, electronic soundtrack, and for being a vast improvement over the original, so that is absolutely true because with the addition of score attack, time attack, and ghost combo really adds the game's overall fun factor which is why it really holds up well as today's standards.

There's one of the game that I did heard of it before, but never actually played it which is a Pac-Man World for PS1. When I had several of PS1 software titles being played on my PS3 slim, I was originally planned to get interested in picking up a PS1's copy of Pac-Man World, but sadly it didn't happen because I've just found out the news from Bandai Namco Entertainment had announced the full remake of the original title through a Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase in June 2022 which is why I decided to get it on PS4 version which I had now instead, just like I did a same with the other Bandai Namco's remakes such as Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series which I also did reviewed the game in 4 months back.

So what's makes Pac-Man World: Re-Pac caught my eye? as a massive fans of 3D platformer genres, it's one of the first Pac-Man game had shifted into a 3D platforming genre rather than a traditional maze-action stuff that we saw from the previous entries in the franchise which I think it's sounds like a neat idea to have a yellow round-shaped hero being on a different route makes it really interesting to play.
With 6 different worlds, wacky looking levels, discovering hidden secrets, completing bonus stages, and you name it which is why I've been spent playing the game for days to get a full completion of 3D platforming campaign.
So is the full remake any good? let's find out all the pros and cons that really give the game's a full justice.

So without go further do, let's start the review.

Presentation

The synopsis of the game's plot are same from the 1999's original game, as it started with Pac-Man's family and friends are seen bringing presents to celebrate Pac-Man's 20th birthday until the whole party went clashed by groups of ghosts kidnapping all of Pac-Man's family and friends.
After the incident, Pac-Man arrives home and noticing everything completely wrecked until he grabs one of many leaflets flying around his home learned that his family and friends are being taken to place called Ghost Island.
Pac-Man then sets out his adventure to rescue them and defeat the ghosts.

There's not very much of the storywise in the game besides the opening cutscenes shows the entire family and friends are spending their great times celebrating Pac-Man's 20th birthday, since we all know the game's franchise started back in the early 80s, until those terrible ghosts coming to ruin the party and captured them all, which causing Pac-Man sets out his adventure to bring his family and friends back in home, so I really liked the simple opening scene in the game which really adds the game's charm.
I find Pac-Man as a character are pretty likable especially with his true form design in 3D game with his added outfits such as orange gloves and red boots which makes him just as appealing and recognisable as his 2D counterpart from the original 1980's game which displays him as pizza-shaped figure.
I wouldn't mind with the supportive NPCs being featured in the game such as his pet dog Chomp-Chomp is now re-named as Pac-Buddy, Pooka is one of the character from other Namco's classic such as Dig-Dug, Pac-Baby is now re-named as Pac-Sis, the elderly Professor Pac, little kid Pac-Jr is now re-named as Pac-Boy, and of course Pac-Man's wife Ms. Pac-Man is now been replaced as Pac-Mom due to licencing conflicts between Bandai Namco and AtGames had took place in 2019-20 which is why Bandai Namco had decided to change it to avoid the lawsuits, so that's kinda shame that we won't able to see Ms. Pac-Man being featured in the game instead we have Pac-Mom as a replacement for now on, oh well.
I also liked the groups of ghostly villains in the game such as Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde are the 4 original enemies from the series previous entries are also been featured in the game.
Blinky appears to be as the quite an aggressive red ghost, Pinky shown to be a pretty looking pink ghost, Inky depicted as a goofy and slow-headed blue ghost, and of course Clyde portrayed as the un-intelligent and bit milder orange ghost.
The main villain in the game that I finding it look cool and down right imitating, so that is Toc-Man which appears to be a enormous robotic-looking Pac-Man with huge ugly metallic teeth, has large fists, spiky boots, rear-wings, and of course big eyes with heavy eye-brows. He's one of the leader of his homeplace Ghost Island was responsible for sending his minions to clash the birthday party, as well as plotting to capture not just the Pac-Man's family and friends, but also Pac-Man which the group of ghosts had failed to capture one which enraging Toc-Man, as he blames them for ruining his plans causing the group of ghosts had to start over by taking down the yellow round-shaped hero.

The entire presentation of the game itself appears to be a brightful and colorful settings which I really liked how the game took place in different locations mixed with tropical and mysterious themes around the environments.
You have pirate ship area filled with tropical looking sea-water and sands, solid looking layouts, wooden houses and bridges, creepy-face landmark from background, and pirate ships. Ruins area has old-fashioned jungle stuff like dark ruins cave, ancient wall-sculptures, lava-pit, long waterfalls, and some environmental pillars.
Space area took place in the far far away galaxy such as futuristic looking space station, floating platforms, bunch of beam lasers, falling asteroids, and of course massive planets at the backgrounds.
Funhouse area is a carnival themed stages filled with spinning and twisted roundabout platforms, bunch of clowns flying around with planes, floating balloons, there are really big rides and prize-winning stuffs going on, and has funky-looking buildings.
Factory area has industrial stuff going around like drones that lifts bunch of crates, thermal pipes that steams out smoke, and large cooling fans that moves very slow at the backgrounds. Then lastly Mansion area has Halloween themed stages scatted with the crooked castle, enemies appears to wore Halloween dresses, falling leaves onto floor, candles been lit on ground, floating caskets, scary looking trees, and smoky backgrounds.
These are really good looking design that the younger audiences will love these kinds of style that appeals to them just like any of other 3D platformers tends to be wacky, comical, and cartoony that makes Pac-Man World looks amazing for its presentation design.

Overall, it has charming opening sequence, likeable characters, and amazing presentation design.

Gameplay

The game sets in 6 different worlds with each 4 levels to complete, which you take control of Pac-Man in 3D perspective levels as your main goal is to beat throughout the stages and defeating numerous of bosses in each worlds.
You move Pac-Man around by pushing with the left stick or go for the old-school with d-pad which ever way it suits your playstyle.
You hit cross button to jump to reach platforms, but rapidly pressing the cross button will make Pac-Man bounce on the floor which acts as ground pound attack on the enemies, as well as breaking objects such as crates or boxes, hitting the switches which activates the new path such as stairs and bridges, and of course jumping on trampolines to reach long-distance platforms. While in mid-air, you hold the square button to float through the platform in 2 seconds.
You can use those Pac-dots as a throwable attacking item by holding the circle button while aiming with left stick, then let go the circle button to throw which works effectively depending on which types of enemies that are immune to the Pac-dots except ghosts which cannot be hurt by throwable Pac-dots or jumping on them.
The only way to defeat the ghosts is to use large-sized power pellets that turns Pac-Man into a mega-sized form allowing him to eat ghosts, who turned fully blue becoming vulnerable against larged-sized Pac-Man, in limited time.
Pac-Man can also perform charge dash by holding then let go the triangle button which can be used as dashing attack on enemies, reaching up the sloppy platforms, and activating moving platforms such as ramps and gates.
You can also re-configure the controls by going on the option menus which you can re-map the button layouts which ever way it suits your playstyle because I always preferred having dash button being placed on R2 trigger.
Pac-Man are also accessing to the new abilities such as metal suit which allowing him to walk underwater in limited time, but you can also use this abilities which works effectively against any of metallic enemies.

While the game's objective is to reach at the finishing goal that leads to the next level, you may also want to explore around the levels to uncover the hidden secrets such as 3D maze-levels icon that transfers you into the 3D maze themed plays similarly to original 1980's game, rescuing your family and friends that been held on captive in the steel cage, and collecting all 6 letters that leads you to the bonus stage.
These can be found in each levels where you will need to find one of any fruit item or Galaxian icon that unlocks the door, the item such as key that unlocks the steel cage to set your family and friends free, and 6 of the each letters can be found somewhere in the levels if you can able to spot it while exploring around the level, so gathering all collectable items and secrets gains you with the high scores when completing the stage.
After completing the main stage with all 6 letters been collected, you're entering into the bonus stage where you had to collect all remaining fruits to gain more bonus scores in time limit, and you may also encountered with the jackpot mini-game if you have collected some tokens from the level, so you will need to complete the jackpot mini-game by lining up 3 matching icons on slots machine which awards you with extra lives.

So far, the remake had improved upon the controls allowing Pac-Man can now walk in all directions as opposed to the original's 8 directions with left stick, as well as being able to move slowly when the left stick is tilted slightly adding a precision to its movement controls making easier to play for the newcomers.
Pac-Man now can automatically sinks into water downward, and hitting the button to go upward just works better overall.
I find the hover jump ability is rather too short and slow which lasted 2 seconds in mid-air which is the weakest part in the game unless you have easy mode turned on which I will discuss the part for later on the review.
I got to say it plays pretty good entirely because I find each of the worlds had some great platforming stuff which involve collecting items, discovering hidden secrets, and simplistic level design that are not overly big, but keeping the levels feels more linear makes it easier for younger audiences able to enjoy platforming game.
It had numerous of enemies in each worlds such as bunch of ghosts dressed up in different outfits (such as pirates, construction workers, and Halloween costumes depending on which types of world you're playing on), walking sliver cannons, skeletons that welds pirate's sword, flying creatures such as parrots and bats, creepy-crawling spiders, blocks of guys that welds club, some puff-fish and sharks that swims around underwater, space-hovering creatures that spins around with 3-ways electrifying stuff, big-rounded blue alien uses their shield projector, clowns flying around with planes, and a tiny-little robot with a torch on the head.
I also liked the design for its numerous of traps and hazards in each worlds such as cannon ball that shoots directly to you from the front screen or background, round-shaped spikes everywhere underwater, hitting deadly ground-switches causing large rock falls onto your head, lava-pit pops out the firery objects, a swinging spiky-logs, a statue that blows out flaming-torch, a lasers beam, a falling asteroids from above, a wall of clowns that blows out purple smoke, and big-huge mallet.
These are the stuff that I've mentioned above really focuses on evading hazards and defeating enemies without taking damage are the only way to get past through the levels giving a good enough challenge that keeps you playing throughout the levels.
The bosses in the game does have really cool segments such as the Windbag the pirate ship at the background firing his cannons, Anubis chases you with long hand sticking out while evading bunch of traps, there's cool shoot-em-up stage similar to Namco's classic such as Galaxian where you must shoot down the robotic bugs before battling with King Galaxian, there's clown racers level similar to Kart racing games where you must beat the opponents by reaching to 1st position to win the race, and the Krome Keeper firing multiple of rockets, as well as blasting out double lasers are certainly my favourite part of the game that keeps it quite entertaining to play.

The remake also introduces easy mode which adds more platforms to specific areas making easier to progress, as well as Pac-Man's hover jump ability extended to 20 seconds in length as opposed to normal mode lasted 2 seconds in length, but it's still kinda too slow, so it can be togged through in pause menu. These features only recommended to those who are new to the platforming games, but be warned having the easy mode turned on resulting the high-scores being excluded, so if any of you wanted to gain more high-scores in each levels I highly recommended to have the easy mode turned off.
While I've managed to enjoy the entire quest mode, I also did enjoy the 3D maze stages that kept me busy playing especially playing on the marathon mode which I love spending time gobbling up all pellets while avoiding bunch of ghosts chasing me around.

The downside is that the game is ridiculously short especially aiming with the 100% completion which took about 6 hours to beat the game, so I wish they should have added a 1 or 2 more brand new worlds sounds like a great addition to the remake.
Thankfully the game does comes with two different ending, as well as obtaining magic key as bonus rewards depending on how you progressed the playthroughs such as how many people you have rescued, how many 6 letters you've collected, how many 3D maze levels you have beaten, and how many the total scores in each levels you have obtained which adds a fair replay value that keeps you busy with the game entirely.

So far, I had a blast to play the entire quest mode filled with fun platforming action, has good bonus stages, collecting things, and really entertaining boss battles is the reason why I had fun playing throughout the game.

Overall, it has great platforming levels, cool boss segments, and some additional stuff such as 3D maze stages.

Graphics

The graphics are just looking solid for its environmental design and visual overhauls, thanks to Unity engine that re-creates the game from the ground up just makes it look better on the modern-day platform including both the PCs and consoles.
I was amazed with twisty 3D scrolling effects that rotates around the levels showing off unique the angles of environmental levels, and I also loved the looks of overall 3D level design starting from foregrounds to backgrounds such as in Pirate area where you see pirate ship at the background, as well as the farris wheels in funhouse area is just done pretty good job.
Each of the levels really nailed with the use of special effects such as the glowing light that follows Pac-Man in the dark places of ruin area, the drones that uses the spotlight in industrial area, and the smoky clouds from the background in mansion area which they did a splendid job with the lighting and shadow techniques.
The character's animation are looking amazing which I got to say I really liked the overhaul looks of the character such as for example: Toc-Man is looking less diseased like from original PS1 version, it made Windbag look more cartoonish feat, and the Krome Keeper is looking more serious looking villain which is why I liked the changes in the remake.

As you can see I'm playing with the PS4 version which runs on 1080p resolution and 60fps performance, same goes with XBONE, is quite good enough to play it on previous generation consoles, where as PS5, XSX/S, and PC version runs on 4k and 60fps are perfect for the 4k screen.
Switch on other hand runs on 1080p in docked or 720p in handheld, and 30fps which is not quite a butter smooth as the other console platforms in terms of performance and screen quality ran and looked better on the Playstation and Xbox systems.

Overall, it has solid environmental design, visual overhauls, twisty 3D scrolling effects, splendid special effects, and amazing character's animation.

Music and Sounds

The game does retain a original soundtrack from the original PS1 version, which was composed by Todd Dennis, with slight bit of alterations.
The jazzy title theme song does sounds like it's coming from Saturday afternoon TVs show or maybe something like that which is pretty fitting for Pac-Man universe.
There are some of the soundtrack that sounds something quite similar such as "Crazy Cannonade" sounds like it belongs to Nickelodeon's Spongebob Squarepants, "Anubis Rex Battle" gives me sort of Crash Bandicoot vibes to it, and "Far Out" is kinda sounds much like the Super Mario Galaxy aesthetics to it.
When I say slight bit of alterations, there are some of the original music are now slightly pitched higher in the remake which I understand some people may not like the way the soundtrack been changed and some others may like the changes.
To me, the rest of the soundtrack are actually pretty good for the 3D platforming aesthetics, and I also liked the new track called "We Are Pac-Man" sang by Kaho Kidoguchi in both Japanese and English version, while the Chinese version was sang by Ann Una which I got to say it's another great song for Pac-Man franchise since the iconic 80's hit single "Pac-Man Fever" by Buckner & Garcia.

The sound effects does have really great use of cartoonish sounds design in entire levels, and let's not forget the recognisable jingles that made Pac-Man quite famous for its "WAKA WAKA" chant while gobbling up all pellets.
It's kinda bummer that it didn't include the full voice acting for the remake, as opposed to 1999's original PS1 version did have it which makes it really interesting for the characters, so I wish they should have done the same by adding the full dialogue on the remake just like with the originals.

Overall, it has a good soundtrack and great sound effects, but please add the full voice for next time.

Special Features

The game does have some cool unlockables in the quest mode, such as 3D maze stages which can be unlocked by obtaining the 3D maze item in each levels that I've mentioned on above before, and it also has marathon mode where you must clear all entire 3D maze stages, and most surprisingly the best part of the game is the original mode where you get to play the original 1980's arcade Pac-Man is just sounds amazing to have it included in the game.

It also shares with 2 Paid DLCs such as Jukebox which you can enjoy listening the entire original soundtrack, and it has DLC skin called Chrome Noir Chogokin.

So far, the unlockables stuff is pretty great especially having to include the most iconic arcade classics from the 80's is the biggest highlight of the feature.

Final Verdict

Presentation 8/10 - charming opening sequence, likeable characters, and amazing presentation design.

Gameplay 7.5/10 - great platforming levels, cool boss segments, and some additional stuff.

Graphics 8.5/10 - solid environmental design, visual overhauls, twisty 3D scrolling effects, splendid special effects, and amazing character's animation.

Music and Sounds 7.5/10 - good soundtrack and great sound effects.

Special Features 8/10 - has 3D maze-stages with marathon mode, original 1980's arcade game, and some DLCs.

Overall 7.5/10 - Pac-Man World: Re-Pac is a good remake title which the fans of the original PS1 version will appreciate with the visual overhaul and improved controls, while still retains with great platforming levels, cool boss segments, and has unlockable features are quite good enough to recommended to those who loves platforming games in general.

The game is quite pricy which cost about £35 or more on both the physical and digital releases, so don't expect the sales goes down because the price of physical copy might go up pretty soon which you may want to consider grabbing a copy ASAP before it gets too expensive or get it cheaper on digitally instead so keep an close eye on the future digital sales.

That being said, I've enjoyed the game and I am hoping Bandai Namco to make another Pac-Man World remake titles such as 2 and 3 in the future perfect.
