Shadows of the Damned PS3 Review

If you enjoy Suda51 games like No more Heroes, Lollipop Chainsaw and Killer 7, you may also like Shadows of the Damned as the Survival Horror games for PS3 and X360. It was developed by Grasshopper Manufacture and published by Electronic Arts.
The story is about the demon hunter Garcia Hotspur comes home to find his girlfriend Paula who been kidnapped by Fleming the Lord of Demons. Garcia tried to stop Fleming escape inside the portal which takes him to deadly underworld along with his sidekick Johnson the Skull head who can transform the gun, torch and motorcycle. Garcia has to fight off the demon to get his girlfriend back where she came from.
The gameplay is played decent well on third person perspective which can be handled like Shinji Mikami's games such as Resident Evil 4. The control scheme is pretty good for main character's movement which he can able to dodge, run and even melee attack by hitting the monster with torch or stun them with light bullet. The weapons are cool, you got 3 choice of weapons like pistol, shotgun and machinegun to use but you can upgrade them to improve the weapon performance when collecting red gem from somewhere abouts to be found or get it from big monster lad named Christopher who sells the goods, and after beating boss gives you blue gems which add-ons the weapons features for example: Pistol has bomb attachment which you can shoot out the sticky bomb on objects or even monsters, then shoot it with normal bullet that can explodes both the objects and monsters. Shotgun can shoot with 4 rounds bullet and grenade. Machine Gun can shoots tons of bullets which attempts the bullets flying around when the targeting goes red while aiming at the monsters. You can also upgrade the health and torch as well to improve the character's abilities. The puzzle is not that hard to solve the problem once you get used to with some levels, but you may not have a map to find the waypoint which is quite shame. I felt the game is quite short which only has 5 acts to complete, so it would have been awesome to have more acts to enjoy the campaign, but it is still fun to enjoy the game.
The graphics are look great with nice visuals, designs and animations which is running on Unreal Engine 3 is pretty look well done.
The music and sound is good as well, the music is composed by Akira Yamaoka as one of the Silent Hill composer did a remarkable job in this game. The sound effects are decent with good sound design and backgrounds. The voice acting are did a pretty good for characters cast.
The special features only has trophy support but lack of chapters select, new game plus, survival mode and theres only one unlockable stuff like very hard difficulty mode which is disappointing but it did have 2D side-scroller bonus stage which is fun to play but it was supposed to be unlockable features on menu screen as well.

Advantages

Good characters and story.

Decent Gameplay.

Great Graphics.

Decent Music and sounds.

Funny moments.

Disadvantages

The game is too short.

No map screen been featured.

Lack of some special features.

Final Verdict

Here is my final opinion.

Gameplay 7/10 - Decent controls is fairly played good.

Graphics 8.5/10 - Nice visuals, designs and animations.

Music and sounds 7/10 - Remarkable music, decent sound effects and good voice casting for characters.

Special Features 3.1/10 - Only got trophy support but lacks chapter select, new game plus, survival mode and only one unlockable stuff like very hard difficulty mode is not fricken enough.

Overall 7/10 - It's a decent horror game for PS3 and X360. It's still the fun game to play with good characters and interesting storyplot is definitely worth to buy this for Suda 51 fans.
