In around 2 months ago when Nintendo had revealed the new system with the first-look trailer, so my initial impression is that the small teaser video is stupidly short just lacks any of details about what this new console is all about which is why they saving it for later to provide more details for Nintendo Direct live at 2nd April.
I had watched the full presentation of Switch 2 Direct live on YouTube to see what they deliver stuff to the new system such as upcoming games, controller, console design, hardware specs, and you name it.
There are some of the good thing to talk about the new system and upcoming games they have, and I will also discuss about the controversial part that I will save it for later on this blog, so without go further do let's get started with my reaction and thoughts on Nintendo Switch 2 - Direct Presentation.
First I wanted to talk about the actual system of the Switch 2, it's basically identical to the predecessor but has additional stuff that's been added to the new system such as large-sized screen which measured 7.9 inch just about 1.7 inch bigger than the first Switch console which I really much preferred playing the handheld system with the bigger-sized screen just feels much opened-wide, while the thickness of the system are remained the same as the first Switch console which measured 13.9mm.
The most important thing about the new system is the hardware performance because we really need a good amount of performance that makes the games plays smoothly and responsive, so if we take a look of the first Switch system which displays 720p resolution on handheld mode and 1080p resolution on docked mode is acceptable for the hybrid system, but the Switch 2 had double the resolution size with 1080p on handheld mode and 4K on docked mode which makes the details of the whole game look cleaner on the screen display, and of course the Switch 2 can ran on between 60fps to 120fps just makes the game's performance plays smoothly compared with the first Switch just dips between 30fps and 60fps are nowhere near as smooth depending on which games you're playing may optimised well and some don't optimised nicely, so it makes totally difference when playing on a new system that can performed much better than the first Switch system.
The new system's docking base also has a cooling fan ventilation meaning the majority of playing a games on 4K that causing the Switch 2 system to overheat can be eliminated by the powerful cooling fan system on the docking base that keeps the new system cool and stable, so that sounds like an amazing improvement over the first Switch console had lacked because we really need a new gaming console that has built-in fan ventilation that keeps the system's lifespan much longer and usable overtime.
The Switch 2 does featured a Vivid LCD and HDR support which provides better range of colours and contrast on the images to make the games look more appealing and beautiful for visual aspects.
I also wanted to talk about the sound design of the new console has been improved providing a much cleaner audio on the speakers resulting a high quality standards and you can also adjust your sound settings with audio balance between the ranges from the built-in speakers to make it clearer and easier to hear things, and it is also supporting a 3d audio mode which provides a dynamic range of sound effects in some games adding more realistic and cinematic feel to it.
The new system has built-in mic for easier voice chatting meaning you can talk and communicate your friends without needing an additional headset with mic-attached, so they can hear you talking during the voice chat rooms and also it has the noise cancellation technology which filters a random background noises which means that your voice will come through clearly without any disruptions from unwanted surrounding sounds.
I also wanted to talk about the internal storage space which is the important thing for the new system because we usually use it for downloading and installing the games onto the new system, so we all know the first Switch console which holds 32GB internally but you can also still use the additional microSD card to free spaces, so for the Switch 2 which maximises the internal storage memory up to 256GB which is eight times bigger than the first Switch console internally and of course you can still use the additional microSD card as well on Switch 2 but theres the catch because unfortunately the regular microSD card will not work on the Switch 2 which is to do with the hardware specs choices meaning that you had to use a express microSD card that are suitable and designed for the new system with correct reading and writing data speed requirements which makes sense because most of the upcoming Switch 2 games are required to be installed on express microSD card in order to run the software properly, just like what SONY did a same with the PS5 console that needs the solid state drive to run the PS5 games as an example.
The Switch 2 has the ability to play the previous Switch games as the backward compatibility because if you had many Switch games libraries on both physical and digital copy you can play some of these compatible Switch games on the Switch 2 system, but I also heard some of the bad news about the compatible games because not all first Switch games will work on Switch 2 console which ran with the compatibility issues which is a bit of concern for those who still wanted to play the previous generation titles, but hopefully Nintendo will investigate the backward compatibility software to get most of the first Switch games libraries working order may gonna take awhile to get it done as soon as possible.
What I've liked about the Switch 2 is the Joy-Con 2, so it is identical to the first Joy-Con we seen from the first Switch console, but the Joy-Con 2 controller did something better that the first Joy-Con had lacked is the magnetic attachment, so instead of sliding your Joy-Con controller on the side of the system like the first Switch console you just simply snap it in onto the side of the system magnetically and having the hard magnets will keep the Joy-Con 2 controller firmly attached to the system resulting a stronger grip to hold and can be detached with a release button on the back of the system.
That is a great design choices for both of the system and controller because it makes it easier for users to attach and detach your Joy-Con 2 controller without any hassle.
They also improved the size of the SL and SR buttons are now bigger on the Joy-Con 2 controller because the first Joy-Con controller from the first Switch console are ridiculously tiny makes it difficult to press the damn thing and it can be really pain in the ass by attaching with the black slide-buttons just feels inconvenient for the users, so they decided to enlarge the size of the SL and SR buttons on the Joy-Con 2 controller for Switch 2 just makes it easier to press it without requiring the black slide-buttons like the first Joy-Con controller.
I like how the control sticks are nicely large just fits comfortably with your large-sized thumbs makes the precision feel naturally for suitable games that needs a comfortable playability.
The best things for Joy-Con 2 controller is the mouse controls functionally which I got to say is the good thing because there are some of the games that are designed to use the mouse controls functionally are mostly worked better for FPS and Point and Click games as an example, so they have confirmed the compatible games with mouse controls support such as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond which is an upcoming FPS Metroidvania games that are perfect fit for the title that support mouse controls functionally are used for aiming and shooting stuff similar to most of the PC's FPS games that uses mouse and keyboard controls as an primary default, so you have two options to choose whether you much preferred to play a standard controller or do you like the mouse controls better which depends on your preferences.
The most important aspects of the new system that really matters the most is the games, so they revealed the new racing game such as Mario Kart World which I got to say the trailer is actually great with two additional game modes such as knockout tour and free roam that made me wanted to play it, and I also discovered another racing game that makes the return after 20 years such as Kirby Air Rider which is a successor of Gamecube's 2005's original game, and of course the Donkey Kong Bananza which finally gets a new 3D platforming treatment since Donkey Kong 64 and I'm definitely looking forward to see this kind of game where you can smash everything in pieces is just looking quite so cool, and then I also discovered the From Software made the collaboration with Nintendo with the new title called The Duskbloods which is a multiplayer based Action-RPG being exclusive to Switch 2, yeah just like what From Software did a same with their IPs for PlayStation platform exclusivity such as Demon's Souls and Bloodborne as an example.
I also did not expect that they had confirmed the Gamecube games services will be available exclusivity for Switch 2 subscription membership under Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack meaning that the first Switch console membership will missed out the Gamecube games services.
They have confirmed the classic titles coming to Gamecube games services such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soul Calibur 2, where as more titles will be added in the future such as Super Mario Sunshine and Luigi's Mansion.
I'm really glad that Nintendo had finally given the Gamecube games a chance of being added to the subscription services because we all loved Gamecube system back in our early-2000s days when it had various of amazing exclusive titles to play like Super Smash Bros Melee is one of my all-time favourite fighting games on the system so that could have been added on the subscription services at the start, so why not Nintendo? we needed that game for Switch 2 subscription and hey give us another amazing games like Eternal Darkness, WarioWare Inc. Mega Party Game$!, Mario Kart: Double Dash, and Starfox Adventures would have been awesome too.
As I'm feeling positive about the system and games, let's talk about the controversial part that brings the backlash to consumer is the price point, so as the Switch 2 will be released on 5th June the fans being wondering about the cost of the system and the launch games that may puzzled them.
The price of the system will vary in different markets but in the UK release will retail at £395 individually or £429 bundled with Mario Kart World (digital copy), so it's a bit tad too high for the Nintendo's new system which I was expecting for £350 would have made sense than the £395 in my opinion, but the most concerning part that made the fans feel outraged is the launch game's price cost around between £65 to £70 digital copy and £70 to £80 physical copy which is not really cheap to purchase making it difficult for consumer to buy games at day 1.
What even worse is that the accessories such as Joy-Con 2 controller as well as Pro controller is likely retail for roughly say £75 or more is quite an abysmal because for those who wanted to purchase an extra controller for local multiplayer games or act as their default controller will likely cannot afford these ridiculously expensive price.
It is not an consumer friendly to you guys unfortunately, so please vote for your wallet guys before you make decision to buy these games, accessories, and the base console because it's going to be hella expensive and very difficult at the same time for the game collectors or those who are looking forward to play a new system.
Bottom line, the Direct Presentation is fine but not great because I like the way the new system design looked, the upcoming games are looking good, the mouse controls support is cool, and of course the Gamecube games services for switch online subscription is a wonderful surprise which I'm happy with that, but except the price choices for the base system, accessories, and games is quite a huge let down may going to hurt the hardware sales, if the consumers will not able to get their hands on with the new system is due to price cost issue on games and accessories aren't getting cheap nowadays, is likely to ruin the Nintendo's whole career, but we don't really know exactly yet until the new system is out on this June release to see how it really went at the end, so will it be a globally successful or will it be a commercial flop at launch? we will find out pretty soon once the new system is out on this June.
